With Tommie Shelby, Robin Celikates, Kristina Lepold, Mirjam Müller, and Daniel James
The workshop is in English, please register below until June 20, 2025.
Topic
Racism is still often understood in terms of the attitudes or actions of racist individuals. In his seminal contributions to the Critical Philosophy of Race, Tommie Shelby has early on objected to this mainstream view and advocated for an understanding of racism that does not abstract from its sociohistorical context but sees it as a type of ideology. But what makes racism into an ideology? How is it different from other types of ideology? What implications does this approach have for the critique of ideology and of racism? And what type of social theory does it require? We will address these questions in a workshop with Tommie Shelby based on his most influential contributions to the debate. Kristina Lepold, Daniel James, Mirjam Müller, and Robin Celikates will provide comments to open up the discussion. The readings for the workshop will be sent out in advance.
